How to Travel with a Cat

While planning for holidays, the owner should plan for the cat as well. They should do some homework in advance i.e. find a safe place; maybe at home, neighbor or friends or an alternative to all these i.e. boarding kennels. The animal should be kept in boarding cattery since kittenhood so that it will adjust itself to a new environment otherwise it may react to restriction of cattery/ kennels and may go on hunger strike or may traumatize itself. So, it is safe to keep them in kennels off and on. The cattery should be investigated and booked in advance.

A sensible pet owner will visit such catteries in advance and will look for cleanliness, space, warmth, and regular air passage. Before boarding they should check vaccination, general health status to make sure that animal is not suffering from mange or ringworm. The cat should be taken for boarding in the morning so that it settles before night. The owner should leave the blanket and other belongings to keep it comfortable and safe.

All details regarding diet or drugs to which a cat is allergic should be described or given in writing to the staff. The owner should give these details like name, home address, contact numbers, e-mails, and other responsible person’s number or holiday address should also be given in case of emergency. So it is advisable and safe to leave them in boarding kennels than leaving them in the house all alone.

While traveling by public transport, the cat should be kept in a carrying box. Before traveling the owner needs certain documents like health certificate and complete

vaccination record. If a cat does not have experience of travel or has a problem due to noise, or are prone to motion sickness, then it is advisable to use a tranquilizer before traveling but only after vet advice as the cat may react to some drugs.

If the weather is cold, then always provide warm material/blankets which will give full warmth to the cat and can be washed easily. If the weather is hot then always try to give newspaper bedding and a cloth soaked in cold water to provide a comfortable journey.

It is difficult to keep water for the cat in a dish as it will spill out from the container and will make a mess inside the box. So, it is suggested to fill a dish with a plastic foam sponge, which will fit exactly in it, and to fill it with water so that foam will soak the water. Then it will be accessible for the cat to lick it whenever it is thirsty. This method can’t be used for liquids other than water, as it may be dangerous for them.

A carrier box should always be properly labeled with clearly printed labels adhered to box stating owner’s and recipient’s name destination, address, telephone number, and in capital letters.

If the cat has to cross national borders, then it is necessary to get the documents of guarantee and vaccination as rabies is a deadly disease and animal should be inculcated properly by a vet from ARV. So, it is mandatory to have a gap between vaccination and transportation. Every country has its guidelines. For complete details, the owner can consult their vet. Fees for all these documentations are payable by the owner. 80, the owner should consider all these points before transportation and importing any cat from another country.
